The best crab cakes have bits of crab! As you divide the batter into six equal sections, carefully press it together to keep the cakes’ form. I prefer to use a cookie scoop to make the crab cakes more equally sized.

Spray the crab cakes on both sides before placing them in the air fryer basket without crowding them. Tips and tricks for the best air fryer crab cakes:

Even though this recipe is quite simple, there are a few things to remember. Here is some advice:

  • Use Fresh Crab: Your crab cakes will taste better if you use fresher crab.
  • Check Internal Temperature: After the crab cakes have finished cooking, I like to check the temperature using a meat thermometer to ensure it has attained at least 145 degrees Fahrenheit. This is particularly crucial if you make your crab cakes thicker than usual because the interiors might take longer to cook through.
  • Mix gently: When forming your cakes, you should be delicate. If your crab cakes are over-formed, the tiny crab pieces will crumble, and your crab cakes will become thick.

Can you prepare air fryer crab cakes using frozen crab instead of fresh?

Of course. It is possible to use frozen lump crab flesh, but properly defrost it first and take special care to drain any excess liquid. You may have to add a bit more panko when using frozen crab. However, I prefer to use fresh crab meat from the fish market or seafood counter at the grocery store for the best results.

How to avoid my hands becoming sticky with the crab cake mixture?

You can prevent the dough from sticking to your hands when shaping the cakes if you lightly oil them or slightly wet them.

Can this recipe be prepared in advance?

Yes. Before forming the cakes, you can prepare the crab cake batter and chill it in the fridge for up to 4 hours, covered. Also, you may create the cakes and chill them in the fridge for the same length before air frying them on a covered platter.

How to serve air fryer crab cakes?

In addition to a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and a creamy dipping sauce on the side, I prefer to serve air-fried crab cakes hot or warm. The tartar sauce is my favorite sauce to serve with.

Air fryer crab cakes are a hit as an appetizer or a main course. Following are some suggested side dishes if you’re serving them for dinner:
